At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School we strongly believe that oracy enables children to express their thoughts, feelings, understanding and ideas fluently. It also helps them to clarify their thinking and to understand new concepts.

Vocabulary

In EYFS, children learn a new word every week and in KS1, children learn a new word every day. New vocabulary introduced is linked to the children's learning. When a new word is introduced, the meaning of the word is discussed and children are provided with examples of how the word can be used within a sentence. Words are shared with parents via a teacher video published on Tapestry.

Our Oracy rules

In oracy sessions, we use simple rules to help everyone talk and listen well. These rules remind us to take turns, listen carefully, speak clearly, and be kind and respectful. By following them, we make sure everyone feels confident to share their ideas and we can learn from each other.
