Year 1 Continuous Provision
At Holtsmere End Infant and Nursery School, we believe that learning should be meaningful, engaging and developmentally appropriate. As part of our approach to Year 1 teaching and learning, we provide a rich continuous provision environment that supports our pupils' smooth transition from Early Years to Key Stage 1.
What is Continuous Provision?
Continuous provision refers to the carefully planned learning environment and resources that are consistently available to children throughout the day. These areas enable children to revisit, practice and deepen their understanding of key concepts through meaningful play and exploration.
This approach promotes independence, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration, all while reinforcing the skills and knowledge that form the foundation of the national curriculum.
What are the benefits of Continuous Provision?
- Smooth transition from EYFS
- Promotes independence and resilience as children make choices in their learning
- Encourages language development and social interaction through collaborative play
- Enables teachers to target individual learning needs through adult led and child initiated activities
- Supports deeper learning by allowing children to explore and revisit concepts
- Improves well-being
- Inclusive for ALL learners
What does Continuous Provision look like at Holtsmere?
At Holtsmere, we follow the Early Excellence approach to continuous provision, which ensures that the provision is both purposeful and progressive. Our Year 1 classrooms are thoughtfully organised into engaging areas such as:
- Reading corners
- Maths
- Creative - Art/Transient Art
- Workshop - Design and Technology
- Writing
- Construction
- Small world and Blocks
- Enquiry - History, Geography, Science
Each area is planned with clear learning intentions that are closely linked to the skills and knowledge outlined in the National Curriculum. Teachers use assessment and observation to plan enhancements that meet the needs of the children and ensure progression in their learning.
Our approach supports high-quality teaching and learning, blending the best of Early Years practice with the expectations of Key Stage 1.
If you are a school looking to implement or enhance continuous provision in Year 1, we would love to share our journey and expertise.
